I run the alternative, independent publisher 404 Ink with Laura Jones. We publish literary magazines and books. In 2017, we:

  • won The Saltire Society Emerging Publisher of the Year
  • won the Creative Edinburgh Startup Award
  • were named #1 in The List Hot 100
  • were in the Young Women's Movement 30 Under 30
  • had the bestselling book of the Edinburgh International Book Festival with our anthology Nasty Women

ELLE described us to be 'heralding a new democratic age of publishing', The Independent noted that our arrival 'is a sign that when we talk about cutting-edge publishing, the small publishers are increasingly defining the scene', and Refinery29 kindly said, 'Without platforms like 404 Ink promoting underrepresented and silenced voices, there would be little light left in the future of the media.'

Our first book Nasty Women launched on Kickstarter and was funded in two and a half days, raising over £22,000 in the campaign. The Huffington Post called Nasty Women ‘the intersectional essay collection feminists need’, and Margaret Atwood described it as 'an essential window into the many hazard-strewn worlds younger women are living in right now'. 404's campaign for Nasty Women was highly commended in FutureBook's Campaign of the Year award. Our next book, Hings by Chris McQueer, has subsequently been reviewed as doing for Glasgow what Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh did for Edinburgh. We have gone on to publish award-winning writers, successfully crowdfund our first graphic novel We Shall Fight Until We Win in partnership with BHP Comics, and become involved with brilliant schemes, including the Queer Words Project Scotland mentoring.

We've hosted sold out events across the UK, one of the most recent being joining First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon and acclaimed Turkish novelist Elif Shafak at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
