I am a freelancer in the creative industries with focus on marketing and publicity, events and festivals, editorial, crowdfunding, writing and event coverage, and digital and coding. I am available for consultancy on all areas of my work. You can find more information on the projects and campaigns I've worked on in each area below.

Marketing & Publicity

In 2017, I was winner of London Book Fair's Trailblazer Award, and part of The Drum's 50 Under 30, for innovation in marketing and digital. I run the marketing and publicity for independent publisher 404 Ink, and have freelanced for companies including Canongate and Penguin Books

404's first two books and the company itself has been featured extensively in print and online at ELLE, The Guardian, Huffington Post, The CUT / New York Magazine, gal-dem, The Daily Record, The Times, and many more. Our marketing campaigns have a strong online presence, and have resulted in successful crowdfunding of our first book on Kickstarter (369%, £22,000+ raised), and rolling funding for our magazine on Patreon, support from people including Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid's Tale), Shirley Manson (Garbage), Limmy and Amanda Palmer. Our events regularly sell out, and all of our books have gone onto a minimum of a fourth print run.

I was also previously Marketing Assistant at Bright Red Publishing, running their online campaigns at key times in the calendar and helping prep print material for events, with proven track record in increasing engagement and sales. I overhauled the online presence of the Society of Young Publishers, which led to a greater presence in the publishing community, growth of attendees and membership sign ups. I've also run and consulted on campaigns for websites and publishers, projects and festivals - including the Saltire Society's virtual literary festival Scot Lit Fest, which made The List Hot 100 in its first year, as well as establishing online presences for niche companies including Green Energy firms, and handling subsequent marketing campaigns.

If you would like more information or me to work with any area of marketing and publicity for your company, or as an individual, get in touch via my contact page.

“We invited Heather into the Bright Red office for a work placement and she was running our social media output within weeks. She’s smart, sharp and brought a lot of creative marketing and digital media skills to our office. Her writing is first class too – a real asset to any modern publishing business.”
— John MacPherson – Director of Bright Red Publishing

Writing and Event Coverage

I'm a freelance writer specialising in music and culture. I cover book events and conferences, and all of these can be found at I'm also a blogger for The Children's Media Conference in Sheffield and have worked with Sky News as part of their innovative new election coverage system, covering the Scottish Independence Referendum and 2015 General Election.

More information on my music and magazine work can be found on the 'Writing and Journalism' section of the website. If you would like to commission me to write for you or cover your event, get in touch via my contact page.

I'm a freelance editor working in the books, magazine and newspaper industry. I'm available to work on all stages from full edits to proof-reading, and for dissertations and PhD submissions. On top of commissioning the essays of Nasty Women and working on other 404 Ink titles, I have worked on a number of Saraband titles, including The Jewel by Catherine Czerkawska, DM for Murder by Matt Bendoris, Ways of the Doomed, Moira McPartlin, The Storm by Neil Broadfoot, The Last Tour of Archie Forbes by Victoria Hendry, Paris Kiss by Maggie Ritchie, and Beyond the Rage by Michael J. Malone.

I've undertaken editorial tasks at all of my roles to date, whether the long lead-time of books, or the fast-paced magazine industry, and have edited multiple academic submissions, two of which were award-winning Civil Engineering dissertations.

If you would like editorial assistance, get in touch via my contact page.

Working with Heather vastly improved my writing skills. She provides helpful, constructive criticism and edits which help fine tune my submissions to Indulge Sound. I am a stronger writer and have gained both knowledge and insight into the world of music journalism thanks to Heather’s input and guidance.
— Elise Hines, Editor of Rezonatr Magazine

I am available for consultancy on crowdfunding projects, having run and advised on multiple successful campaigns. 404 Ink's Kickstarter for our anthology Nasty Women was 369% funded, raising over £22,000 in 30 days, gaining international press in the process - The Huffington Post dubbed it 'the intersectional essay collection feminists need' while it was funding. Our Patreon is a subscription-based crowdfunder that helps fund our twice annual literary magazine. I can advise on all stages from setting up your project, to the marketing and execution of your campaign.

If you need crowdfunding, get in touch via my contact page.

Events and Festivals

I have a lot of experience in events, both behind the scenes and chairing. I coordinate Scot Lit Fest, the Saltire Society's virtual book festival celebrating Scottish literature. This involves programming, scheduling authors' timetables, liaising with publicists and agents, marketing, and more. In its first year, it made The List Hot 100. I'm also co-chair of the Society of Young Publishers, who run monthly events and conferences to support and teach those in their first ten years in the publishing industry, and organise festival slots and performances for authors at 404 Ink.

I'm frequently an event chair and speaker, having hosted events as part of SYPGlasgow Comic Con's industry events, and Dunfermline Comic Con, as well as various book launches.

I've been invited to present at a number of events and conferences, including Publishing Scotland's conference, PPA Scotland's MagFest and Creatives Mean Business. I also spoke at the Edinburgh International Book Festival on the topic of women under public scrutiny alongside First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and acclaimed Turkish novelist Elif Shafak, a headline, sold out event.

For any queries regarding events, or to have me speak at or host an event for you, get in touch via my contact page.

Heather made a remarkable contribution to this innovative initiative, [Scot Lit Fest]. She brought imagination, energy and professionalism to a very successful project. We’d be delighted to work with Heather in the future.
— Jim Tough, former Executive Director of the Saltire Society

Digital and coding

I have been running websites since the age of 14, and have a unique background in the industry having run fansites for bands that went on to become the biggest of their kind in the world through my teens, to setting up and running for five years, running a team of 30+ contributors from the UK, USA, Europe, Canada and Australia.

I also code and convert Bright Red's study guides for the Digital Zone, their award-winning free online resource for students - this includes HTML and LaTeX coding for mathematics and formulae, though I also have a working knowledge of CSS. I am comfortable working with websites and can be hired to make websites for individual projects or people. I can also consult on the running of websites with teams, workflow systems and further advice.

For digital queries, get in touch via my contact page.

Working as part of her team was a great experience. She knows how to build a team, communicate effectively, use social media to her advantage and manage her time extremely well. She’s also very encouraging, helpful and keeps people motivated. I’ve worked on a few other projects with Heather too - she’s always organised with what she needs to do and what she needs from others and frankly, excels when there’s a tight deadline.
